Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DID FIRE CHANGE HOW PEOPLE LIVED?

The Big Idea

Imagine a night with no lights, no heat, and no cozy place to gather. That's how it was for early people, until they learned to use fire. Fire gave them light, warmth, a way to cook, and a place to be together. It stretched the day and warmed the night!

Step 1

Number one: fire gives warmth. On chilly nights, people could sit near the flames and stay warm. That let groups live in colder places, where it would have been too hard before.

Step 2

Number two: light stretches the evening. After sunset, a fire lets people see, work, and talk together. Firelight can also help keep some wild animals away. But fire is never a toy!

Step 3

Number three: the hearth becomes home. A hearth is a fireplace, often made from a ring of stones. People cooked food there, shared meals, and told stories. A fire made a camp feel like home.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at an old hearth. A ring of stones holds the fire in one place. The flame gives heat and light, and cooks the food. And a circle of people gathers around. That's how a hearth becomes the heart of a camp!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists think people were using fire more than 400,000 years ago. Old hearths can leave behind ash, charcoal, and burned bones, which are clues for archaeologists. Cooking made food softer and safer to eat. And sitting around a fire helped people share stories and ideas.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! First, name two jobs that fire does after sunset. Next, imagine finding a ring of old stones with black ash in the middle. What might it tell you? Then, ask why people would keep a fire in one special spot. And remember, fire is a grown-up tool. Never start one alone!
