What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some fossils look smashed or stretched?
The Big Idea
Some fossils look flat or bent. But the animal did not look like that when it was alive! After a fossil forms, the rock around it can be squeezed, stretched, or folded by heat, weight, and moving ground. The fossil gets changed along with the rock.
Fossil Forms
Step one: the fossil forms. A bone turns into stone in the rock, and at first its shape is just right. But the ground keeps moving. Rock is not always as still as it looks.
Layers Squeeze
Step two: the layers get heavy. More rock piles on top, and the pressure and heat grow. Moving ground can push from the sides, too. All of that squeezing takes a very long time.
Fossil Distorts
Step three: the fossil is distorted. When rock folds or slides, the fossil is squashed or stretched with it. That can make a skull look longer or flatter than it really was. The animal itself never looked squashed!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a squashed fossil! This fossil was squeezed flat. The pressure came from above. The rock layers around it folded. Scientists measure it, and compare it with other bones, to work out the true shape. It is a bit like un-squishing a toy.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A stretched skull can fool you about the animal's face. Photos from more than one angle help. The rock's wrinkles are part of the report. Never hammer a smashed fossil to fix it.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! If a fossil is flat, what should you check besides the animal? Why compare it with an undistorted bone of the same kind? What story does the folded rock add? Press a lump of clay flat, and see how its shape changes.
Outro
Even squashed fossils still help us learn about the past. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
