Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are most fossils not complete skeletons?

The Big Idea

Museums show whole skeletons, but most fossils are found in pieces. After an animal dies, scavengers, rivers, and time can scatter its bones. So scientists often solve the puzzle with only a few pieces.

Body Rests

Step one: a body rests. When a dinosaur dies, its bones are still together at first. But it will not stay that way. Nature has a lot of busy helpers.

Pieces Move

Step two: bones get moved. Scavengers pull pieces apart. Floods and rivers can carry light bones far away, while heavier ones stay behind. The pieces get separated. A leg might end up far from the head.

Uneven Burial

Step three: only some parts get buried. Only some bones get covered in time. Hard parts, like teeth, last better than thin ribs. Even one bone or tooth can start a case. Scientists are very good at working with clues.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a partial find! The skull may be missing. Some ribs may be missing. A tooth might be found. A river may have carried the rest away. Missing pieces tell us how the body traveled.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Museum mounts often mix real bones and casts. Check the label to see what was found. Single bones are worth mapping. A missing part is data, because it shows the body was moved. Never add rocks to make a find look complete.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Why do teeth show up more often than skin? What might have moved bones far apart? Why is a partial find still useful? Draw a dinosaur with some missing parts, and guess what the parts could be.

Outro

Even a few bones can tell a big story about the past. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
