Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do movies get dinosaur colors wrong?
The Big Idea
Most dinosaur skin and feathers turned to rock without keeping their color. So movies often pick colors that look cool. Scientists only suggest a color when there are tiny clues. Movies guess the paint job, but fossils keep the bones!
Soft Parts Fade
Step one: soft parts usually fade. When an animal is buried, bones can last for millions of years. But soft skin and its color usually rot away. So most fossils are bone-colored, not skin-colored.
Rare Color Clues
Step two: rare clues sometimes stay. In a few feather fossils, scientists have found tiny packets called melanosomes. Their shapes can hint at colors like black, brown, or rusty red. That is a real clue, but it is very rare.
Honest Guesses
Step three: science stays honest. Scientists can sometimes guess a pattern, like stripes on a tail. But an exact paint color is much harder. When we do not know, a good museum label says so.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a color clue! A fossil feather, if we are lucky. Tiny packets of color that we can see under a microscope. And a movie, which only guesses the rest.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Nobody ever photographed a living T. Rex. Pattern guesses are stronger than exact paint-chip colors. Artists should label what is possible and what is known. Enjoy the movie, then read the museum card.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! What part of a dinosaur is least likely to keep its color? What tiny clue can still hint at a pattern? Why is the sentence we do not know yet a good scientific sentence? Try drawing a dinosaur, and mark which colors are known and which are guesses.
Outro
Being honest about what we do not know is a scientist's superpower. Keep looking closely! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
