Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why did dinosaurs need so much food?
The Big Idea
A huge body is like a giant machine, and it needs lots of energy to run. Muscles, growing, and moving all use energy, and energy comes from food. So a giant dinosaur had to eat and eat. A big body means a big appetite. Feeding it was a full-time job!
A Huge Body
Step one: a huge body to run. A giant dinosaur had way more body than you do, with a huge number of tiny cells. Every cell needs energy. So the fuel bill was enormous.
Plants Are Cropped
Step two: plants are cropped all day. A long-necked dinosaur probably spent much of the day clipping leaves, like a living lawn mower. It was an all-day snack. Chomp, chew, and swallow, over and over.
The Gut Unlocks Energy
Step three: the gut unlocks energy. Inside the body, a big gut broke the plants down and turned them into energy. That energy powered every step and every bit of growth.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the food bill! A huge body has lots of cells to feed. It needs a giant pile of plants. And the food is turned into energy.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! An animal as big as a school bus cannot live on a sandwich! Warm-blooded or not, big still means hungry. Scientists still debate how dinosaurs stayed warm. Fossil dung, called coprolites, can show what dinosaurs ate. In the field, do not poke real coprolites. Photos beat souvenirs!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! If the forest thinned, who would feel it first, a tiny dinosaur or a giant? What job does a long gut do? Why is bigger not always better? Draw a food pile for a giant and one for a chicken-sized dinosaur. Compare them!

Every big body starts with a big pile of plants. Keep asking why! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
