Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why did some dinosaurs live in herds?

The Big Idea

Many dinosaurs lived in herds, groups that traveled together. In a herd, many eyes can spot danger, and the group can share a trail. Young ones can stay safely in the middle. It is a bit like a moving fence!

One Lookout

Step one: many eyes spot danger. With lots of animals watching, at least one is likely to notice a hunter coming. That one can warn the rest of the group.

Young Stay In

Step two: the young stay in the middle. Scientists think that in some herds the adults walked around the outside while the young stayed in the middle. Fewer hunters can reach the babies there.

A Wall of Bodies

Step three: a wall of bodies. A crowd of horns or a row of long necks is a loud stay back message. A hunter has to think twice. Then the group can move on together to new food.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a herd clue! Big adult prints. Smaller prints from the young. And they all head the same way, side by side. That hints at a group on the move.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A bone bed is not always a herd, because floods can pile up strangers. Scientists compare tracks and bones before saying family trip. Living herds today give us ideas to test, not proof. Museum herds are arranged, so read the label about what was really found together.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! What two clues would make a herd idea stronger? Why might a flood fool you into thinking animals lived together? What job does the middle of the group do? Try to think of a living animal that travels in a herd.

Outro

Staying together can help many animals stay safe. Keep asking why! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
