Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we find dinosaur footprints?

The Big Idea

A dinosaur footprint is a moment that turned to stone. If a dinosaur stepped in wet mud, and the mud later turned into rock, the print could last for millions of years, even 100 million! That is why we can find footprints today.

A Foot Presses Mud

Step one: a dinosaur steps in mud. Wet mud along a shore or riverbank is soft. When a dinosaur walked across it, each foot pressed a clear print into the mud. The shape of the foot stayed there.

Sand Covers It

Step two: sand covers the print. Later, the mud dried. Then wind or water brought sand and mud that covered the print, and it was buried and kept safe. Layer after layer piled on top.

Rock Forms

Step three: the mud turns to rock. Over a very long time, the layers hardened into rock. Much later, wind and water wore the top layers away, and the print showed up again. A walk from long ago was still there for us to find.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a trackway! Each footprint is one print. The gap from one step to the next is called the stride. And the prints show which way the dinosaur was going. A line of prints tells a story!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Please do not walk on real trackways. One shoe can hurt a print that is millions of years old. Parks often build a boardwalk next to the prints. A cast in a museum is a copy, while the real rock may stay outside. Take photos, but do not peel or chip the stone.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! If two different print sizes walk side by side, what might that mean? What can a track tell you that a bone cannot? Why is a line of prints better than just one print? Next time you walk on soft ground, look back at your own tracks!

Outro

A footprint is a walk that lasted for millions of years. Keep following the clues! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
