Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do dragonflies dart over ponds?

The Big Idea

Dragonflies dart over ponds because a pond is their hunting ground! Ponds are full of tiny flying insects, and the water is where baby dragonflies grow up. So grown-up dragonflies zoom back and forth over the water, looking for a snack. A pond is a busy airport for dragonflies!

Bugs Over the Water

Step one: tiny bugs gather over the water. Mosquitoes and midges hatch from ponds and swarm above them. For a dragonfly, that is a floating snack bar. No wonder it patrols there.

Amazing Flying

Step two: a dragonfly is an amazing flyer. It has four wings that move on their own, so it can dart forward, hover, and even fly backward. Some zip along as fast as a speedy bike. That helps it chase bugs.

Giant Eyes

Step three: giant eyes spot a meal. A dragonfly's eyes are made of thousands of tiny lenses. They notice the smallest movement, so it can grab a bug right out of the air. Males also patrol the water to guard a spot.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a dragonfly! Its four wings steer all on their own. Its huge eyes watch in nearly every direction. And its spiny legs make a basket to scoop up a meal.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Baby dragonflies, called nymphs, live underwater before they grow wings. Dragonflies eat lots of mosquitoes, so they are great helpers. Dragonflies do not sting people. Watch them from a distance. Stay back from the water's edge, unless a grown-up is with you.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Sit by a pond with a grown-up, and watch one dragonfly. Does it come back to the same spot? Count how many times it turns in one minute. Draw its path on paper.

Outro

A pond is a runway, a snack bar, and a nursery all at once! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download!
