Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we hear more when we stop walking?
The Big Idea
Your own feet, jacket, and whispers are like a marching band. When you freeze, that band stops, and the real woods can reach your ears. Stopping also lets your eyes finish adapting to the dark. Ears work best in quiet, and a pause gives them a fair chance.
Walking Makes Noise
Step one: walking makes noise. Every step crunches leaves, and your jacket swishes. That sound is very close to your ears, so it is the loudest. Even a zipper or a whisper can sound loud when the night is quiet.
You Stop
Step two: you stop. When you stand still, your own noises drop away. Still air and still feet make a better microphone. Standing still also helps you spot movement, since your eyes notice things that move.
Ears Reset
Step three: your ears reset. Soft sounds appear, like frogs, owls, and a rustle far away. A quiet map of the woods appears, telling you who is where. Give it a minute, and even more sounds show up.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a pause! Still feet stop the crunch. A quiet kid makes less noise. A night frog may sing from far away. And a listening kid stays safe with a grown-up!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Count to thirty before you decide the woods are empty. Do not shush so loudly that you become the noise. Stay on the path while you listen. A pause is for the whole group, not one kid going off to listen.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Listen on a safe path with a grown-up. Walk a little, and then stop. What sound showed up only after you stopped? What was your own body hiding? Write down every new sound. Keep your voice low, and listen with all your attention.
Outro
Stopping shows us that sometimes the best way to learn is to listen. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
