Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a campfire look extra bright at night?

The Big Idea

The fire did not get hotter just because the sun left. Your eyes adapted to the dim woods, so the same flames look like a spotlight. A small bright flame against black trees also makes a huge contrast.

Eyes Adapt to Dark

Step one: eyes adapt to the dark. As the sun sets, your pupils open and your rod cells take over. Soon the dim woods feel normal. It can take around 20 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the dark.

The Fire Is Lit

Step two: the fire is lit. A small flame against black trees is a big contrast. It is bright, but it is not any hotter than it would be at noon.

Pupils and Contrast Jump

Step three: your pupils and the contrast make the fire look huge. Open pupils let in lots of light from the flame. Afterward, look away into the dark for a minute, and your night vision starts to return.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at contrast! The flame is small, bright, and warm. The dark trees make the flame stand out. The adapted eye is ready for dim light. And the water bucket keeps the fire safe!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A grown-up runs the fire. Kids do not add mystery sticks. Use a fire ring before the first match. Keep water or dirt ready, and never leave a fire. Drown it until it is cold. A grown-up should check for burn bans, because dry woods plus wind is a no.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Try this safely with a grown-up at a fire ring. Look at the fire, then look into the dark trees. What disappeared when you stared at the flames? Why did contrast trick your brain? Stay back from the fire ring.
