Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do ducks dabble upside down?

The Big Idea

Dabbling is shallow-water grocery shopping. A duck tips its tail up and its head down to reach food on the bottom. Plants, seeds, and tiny animals are waiting in the mud.

Shallow Pantry

Step one: a shallow pantry. Plants, seeds, and tiny animals rest on the bottom of shallow water. A duck can see the food, but it is just out of reach.

Duck Tips

Step two: the duck tips. A light body and waterproof feathers keep the duck floating, so it tips forward instead of diving. Its tail points up, and its bill reaches the mud.

Bill Sifts, Tail Stays Dry

Step three: the bill sifts. The edges of the bill work like a strainer, letting mud and water out while snacks stay in. Then the duck pops back up, swallows, and looks around. Waterproof feathers keep the tail mostly dry.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a dabbling duck! The bill sifts mud to keep the food. Seeds and plants are the main meal. Shallow water lets the duck reach the bottom. And a light, floating body keeps the duck from sinking!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Bread is still junk food for ducks, so let them dabble for real pond food. Do not sneak up and splash a tipping duck. Shallows can drop off suddenly, so stay on the bank. Watch from a path. Chasing ducks into deep water is not science.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Watch a duck's tail with a grown-up. Watch a duck's tail from a safe spot. Is the bird diving, or just tipping? What is the bill doing in the mud? Write down what you saw.

Outro

Ducks show us that a funny posture can be a smart trick. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
