Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some ponds freeze while springs stay open?

The Big Idea

A still pond loses heat at its surface and can grow an ice lid. A spring has moving water that comes from underground. That water is not winter-cold, and it keeps moving, so ice has a hard time forming.

Winter Nips the Pond

Step one: winter nips the pond. Cold air steals heat from the top of still water. The surface gets colder and colder.

An Ice Lid Forms

Step two: an ice lid forms. Because the water is quiet, ice can spread across the top like a lid. Fresh groundwater is different. It comes from deep in the ground, where the soil stays nearer to year-round cool.

Spring Water Keeps Moving

Step three: spring water keeps moving. It arrives already above freezing, and it carries a little stored warmth from the ground. Motion fights ice too, so a dark window stays open in the white.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a frozen pond! The ice lid covers the still parts of the pond. The spring source brings in water from underground. Moving water is harder to freeze. And winter air is cold enough to freeze the still parts first!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Open water in a frozen pond is a warning, not a path. The edge of ice near a spring can be thin and rotten. Never test ice thickness by jumping on it. Stay off frozen ponds unless a trusted grown-up has checked them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a photo with a dark hole in the ice, with a grown-up. Look at a photo of a frozen pond with a dark hole. What was moving water doing there? Which parts of the pond froze first? Why did the still parts freeze more easily?

Outro

Springs show us that moving water has a winter superpower. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
