Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do wetlands soak up floods?
The Big Idea
A wetland is like a giant sponge. Water spreads out into shallow basins, and plants and spongy ground hold it. Then the water drips out slowly, instead of rushing downstream all at once.
Hard Rain Hits
Step one: hard rain hits. A big storm drops a lot of water very quickly. On a paved street, that water cannot soak in, so it rushes away.
The Wetland Spreads It
Step two: the wetland spreads it. In a wetland, water spreads sideways into shallow, bumpy basins. Roots and dead plants act like a thousand tiny dams.
Plants and Peat Hold It
Step three: plants and soil hold the water, then release it slowly. The sponge fills up, and then it lets water trickle out over days instead of minutes. That means the river gets a trickle, not a wall of water.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a wetland! Rain falls onto the wetland. Plants and roots slow the water down. A basin is a shallow bowl that stores the water. And a slower stream leaves the wetland after a while!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Filling in a wetland to build on it can make floods worse downstream. Stay on boardwalks, because hidden water can be deep. Wetlands are homes for many animals, not empty lots. After storms, a grown-up should skip flooded paths.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Compare a parking lot and a marsh after rain, with a grown-up. Watch where rain goes on a parking lot. Then watch where rain goes in a marsh or grassy spot. Where did the puddle last longer? Which place sent water downstream faster?
Outro
Wetlands show us that a soft, spongy place can protect a whole town. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
