Why Do Salamanders Like Damp Logs?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do salamanders like damp logs?

The Big Idea

Many salamanders breathe partly through thin, wet skin. Dry air can pull water out of that skin. The underside of a damp log stays cool and moist, so it works like a humid little cave.

The Sun Dries Open Ground

Step one: the sun dries open ground. In the daytime, open ground gets warm and dry. For an animal with thin, wet skin, that is a big risk.

The Log Traps Moisture

Step two: the log traps moisture. The underside of a log stays cool, shady, and damp, and it keeps the ground wet. The salamander's skin stays moist, so breathing can continue.

Food Hides There Too

Step three: food hides there too. Worms and small bugs also like damp, dark places, so dinner is nearby. The log also hides the salamander from birds, and at night it comes out to roam.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look under a log! Damp wood holds water like a sponge. The salamander waits in the cool dark. Worms nearby give it food. And shade keeps the whole spot from drying out!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! If you peek under a log, put it back the same way, because you just opened someone's house. Sunscreen, soap, and dry hands can hurt a salamander's skin, so look, but do not touch. Never keep a wild salamander in a jar. After woods play, wash your hands.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Peek under a log with a grown-up. With a grown-up, gently lift a log and look. What should happen next after you peek? Why would a sunny sidewalk be a bad home? What does the dampness protect?
