Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do slugs leave a shiny trail?
The Big Idea
The shine is slime! A slug makes mucus so its soft foot can glide over rough, dry ground. The slime also helps it stick and stay damp. Snails use slime too, under their portable houses.
Foot Presses
Step one: the foot presses down. A slug moves on one soft, muscly foot. It presses against the ground, and ripples move along it.
Slime Comes Out
Step two: slime comes out. The slug makes mucus, and it coats the path in front. It is slippery going forward, and sticky enough not to fall off a leaf. It even helps the slug slide over sharp bits, since it has no shell to protect it.
Trail Dries
Step three: the trail dries. As the slug glides away, it leaves a shiny line behind. Another slug may follow that damp road, because it is easier to travel.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a slug! The eyestalks help the slug sense light and smells. The mantle is the saddle-like patch on its back. The foot is the soft bottom that glides along. And the shiny trail is the dried slime it leaves behind.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Slime keeps a slug from drying out as fast. Salt is harmful to slugs, so never pour salt on one. After rain, more slugs come out because the air is wet and safer. Snails use slime, too, under their portable houses.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a dry shiny trail on a patio after a damp night. Is the line still slippery? What left that shine? Write down your idea.
Outro
A trail of slime is a slug's little road. It keeps the slug moist, helps it glide, and leaves a shiny clue for curious kids to find. Nature is full of surprises, so keep looking down as well as up!
