Why Do Bees Dance?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do bees dance?

The Big Idea

A honeybee dance is a map in motion! A finder bee tells the hive where good flowers are by walking a figure-eight on the honeycomb. It is like a little treasure map, without a single word.

Find Flowers

Step one: find flowers. A scout bee finds a patch full of sweet nectar. She knows just what the hive would love.

Fly Home and Waggle

Step two: fly home and waggle. She flies back to the hive, and dances the waggle run. She walks in a shaking line, then loops around in a figure-eight.

Angle Points the Way

Step three: the angle points the way. The angle of the waggle run points toward the food, compared with the sun. The length of the waggle tells about distance, and then the team flies out!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the dance! The dancer bee is the scout with the news. The waggle line shows the direction and the distance. The figure-eight shows where she loops back to start again. And the sun is the sky mark the bees use to read the map.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Short waggles often mean the food is closer. The dance happens inside the dark hive, on the vertical honeycomb. The scent on the dancer helps, too. Watch kept bees only with a beekeeper, and do not lean on a wild hive.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at a simple drawing of a figure-eight dance. If the waggle aims up, what sky mark is the bee using? What would a longer waggle mean? Write down your guess.

Outro

Bees share news with a dance, and that is teamwork in action. A little shake, a little loop, and the whole hive learns where the flowers are. That is one amazing map, made without a single word.
