Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do dragonflies hover?

The Big Idea

Hovering is hunting in place! A dragonfly has four wings that can beat in different patterns. So it can stop, dart, and snatch a flying insect right out of the air. Damselflies are slimmer cousins that hover too, usually closer to plants.

Spot the Prey

Step one: spot the prey. A dragonfly has giant eyes that can track tiny moving things. It locks onto a gnat, and it can do it while hanging in one spot.

Four Wings Beat

Step two: four wings beat. Each wing works like its own paddle, and the dragonfly can change the angle of each one. That lets it fly forward, backward, or hang like a tiny helicopter.

Dart and Snatch

Step three: dart and snatch. When the prey is close, the dragonfly zips in. Its legs form a little basket in the air and scoop up the snack.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a dragonfly! The front wings are one pair of paddles. The back wings are a second pair that can move differently. The huge eyes help it keep track of prey. And the legs bunch up like a basket to catch food.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dragonflies are among the sharpest fliers of all insects. Young dragonflies, called nymphs, live in water before adults take to the air. Hovering uses a lot of energy, so it is a hunting tool, not a rest pose. Watch dragonflies at ponds with a grown-up, and do not swing nets at them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, watch a dragonfly over the water. Does it hang in place, and then zip away? What do you think it was waiting for? Try sketching the path it flew.

Outro

A tiny helicopter with a big appetite, and four wings that do amazing tricks. Nature is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
