Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do ticks hitch a ride?
The Big Idea
A tick is a tiny hitchhiker that needs a blood meal to grow and to make eggs. It cannot fly or jump. So it waits on grass and grabs a passing animal, or even a pant leg. Tall weeds, leaf piles, and trail edges are common waiting rooms.
Wait on Grass
Step one: wait on the grass. The tick climbs a blade of grass or a leaf. It holds up its front legs and waits, which is called questing.
Sense a Host
Step two: sense a host. Ticks can sense breath, warmth, and movement nearby. When something brushes by, the tick hooks on with its front legs.
Grown-up Check
Step three: the grown-up check. After being outside, a grown-up checks your skin, hair, and clothes. Finding a tick early makes it much easier to remove safely.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a tick! A tick has eight legs, so it is not an insect. The body is small and round, and it swells when it feeds. The mouthparts are made for holding on and drinking blood. And the grass blade is its lookout.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Ticks are arachnids, like spiders, not insects. Not every tick carries disease, but some can, and that is why checks matter. Stay on the path, and wear long socks in tall grass. If you find a tick, tell a grown-up right away. They can remove it carefully with fine tweezers.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! After a trail walk, check your socks and cuffs with a grown-up. Where would a hitchhiker grab first? What habit would make grabbing harder? Write down what you found, and become a tick detective!
