What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Today's expedition is a big one. Why do butterflies start as caterpillars?

The Big Idea

A butterfly is one animal with two jobs. The caterpillar is the eating machine, and the adult is the flying, mating, nectar-sipping machine. In between, the body is rebuilt in a change called metamorphosis. Inside the chrysalis, the change can take about two weeks for some butterflies.

An Egg

Step one: an egg. A tiny egg sits on a leaf. Different butterflies need different host plants, so the egg is laid on the right leaf.

Caterpillar and Chrysalis

Step two: the caterpillar eats, then makes a chrysalis. The caterpillar hatches and munches, and after enough leaves, it makes a chrysalis. A chrysalis is a hard case that hangs still while the big change happens inside. While it rests, the caterpillar's body is being remade.

Rebuild and Fly

Step three: rebuild and fly. Inside the chrysalis, the body is rebuilt into wings, a sipping mouth, and long legs. The adult dries its wings and flies away. It is one of the biggest makeovers in nature.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the change! The egg is where the story begins. The caterpillar is the eating machine. The chrysalis is the rebuilding case. And the butterfly is the flying adult.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A caterpillar can eat many times its own weight in leaves. The rebuild needs the case, so do not peel a chrysalis open. Moths, beetles, and flies also change form, but their cases look different. Safety first: watch, don't pick every caterpillar off a garden plant, unless a grown-up says so.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a photo of a monarch life cycle, in a book or on a screen. Which stage has no wings? What job was that stage doing? Write down your observations, and become a butterfly expert!

Outro

Now you know! A caterpillar becomes a butterfly by rebuilding itself. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
