Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Grab your explorer hat! Why do fireflies glow?

The Big Idea

The glow is a living lantern, used as a signal. Many fireflies flash to find a mate, and some young larvae glow too, as a keep-away warning. Let's see how a firefly flashes! There are over 2,000 kinds of fireflies in the world.

Dusk Falls

Step one: dusk falls. As the sky darkens, fireflies wake up and rise from the grass. It is lantern time.

Chemicals Mix

Step two: chemicals mix. Inside the tail, special chemicals and air meet in a chemical recipe. That recipe makes cold light, with almost no heat wasted, unlike a light bulb. Many of them live in warm, damp places.

Code and Answer

Step three: a code is sent, and an answer flashes. Each species uses its own blink pattern, like a secret flash password. When another firefly replies, the two find each other.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a firefly! The wing covers are the hard shell on the back. The lantern is the glowing part of the tail. The legs are six thin walkers. The eyes watch for flashes from other fireflies. The flash is the signal itself. Flashes can tell a firefly who is nearby, and who is a friend.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The light is called bioluminescence. Yard lights can drown out the signals. Some click beetles, and deep-sea animals, make light the same general way. Safety first: catch-and-release in a jar needs air holes and a quick goodbye. Do not spray bugs just to see them glow.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, watch a summer lawn at dusk. Are the flashes single blinks, or patterns? What happens near a bright porch light? Why might lights matter to a firefly?

Outro

Now you know! Fireflies glow to talk to each other in the dark. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
