Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do spiders spin webs?

The Big Idea

A web is a hunting net and a home alarm. Spider silk is liquid protein that hardens in air into a thread that is very strong for its size. Let's watch a spider build one! It is very clever, and it works around the clock.

Bridge Line

Step one: the bridge line. A first thread floats out and crosses a gap. The spider pulls it tight to make a bridge.

Frame and Spokes

Step two: the frame and the spokes. The spider sets the outer frame, and then adds dry lines that run like bicycle spokes. Those dry spokes let the spider walk across. Some spiders eat their old web and spin a new one every day.

Sticky Spiral and Wait

Step three: the sticky spiral. Now the spider adds sticky spirals, which catch flying insects. Then it waits, and feels a shake when dinner arrives.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a web! The sticky spiral is the trap that catches insects. The spokes are dry lines the spider walks on. The hub is the center where the spider waits. The silk thread is strong and stretchy. And the spider is the builder. Silk comes in several types, and each one has its own job.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Silk comes from spinnerets at the back of the spider. A web can be rebuilt in a night if wind wrecks it. Most house spiders are not out to hunt people. Safety first: look, don't poke. If a spider is in a bedroom, a grown-up can move it outside.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a web in a garden corner, without touching it. Is it a wheel, a sheet, or a mess? Where would an insect get stuck? Why might the spider build it this way?

Outro

Now you know! A spider's web is a clever net made of silk. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
