Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Today's expedition is a big one. Why do mosquitoes bite?
The Big Idea
Not every mosquito bites people. Many sip plant juices, and only some females take a tiny blood meal, because they need extra protein to make eggs. So a bite is really an egg-making mission. The ones that bite are almost always female.
Search
Step one: search. The insect finds you by your breath, warmth, and smell. It is looking for a safe spot to land. They can sense the carbon dioxide you breathe out from far away.
Land and Sip
Step two: land and sip. Six legs settle on skin, and a needle-like mouth pierces it. It drinks a tiny meal of blood. The mosquito's spit is what makes the bite itch afterward.
Fly Off, Eggs Need Water
Step three: fly off. The insect flies off to rest. Later it lays eggs in standing water, like puddles or flower pots. After laying eggs, the female may look for another meal.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a mosquito! The wings carry it through the air. The needle mouth can pierce skin. The legs are six thin landing gear. The abdomen swells when the meal is done. The antennae sense smells and warmth. Mosquitoes have been around for millions of years.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Standing water is a nursery, so dump saucers and buckets. An itch is your body noticing the bite. Some places have disease-carrying mosquitoes, which is why screens matter. Safety first: tell a grown-up about lots of bites, or a fever after travel.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, hunt for standing water in a yard. Do not touch any insects. How many mosquito nurseries did you find? What would dumping the water change? Keep your eyes peeled for wet spots.

Now you know! Mosquito bites are all about making eggs. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
