Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do acorns become oaks?
The Big Idea
An acorn is an oak baby, packed with lunch. If it lands in damp soil and does not get eaten, that lunch fuels a root, then a shoot, then a tree. That is how a mighty oak begins! It may take many years, but every giant oak once fit in your hand.
The Acorn Falls
Step one: the acorn falls. In autumn, the nut leaves the parent tree. Most acorns get eaten, but a few get lucky.
A Cold Rest, Then a Root
Step two: a cold rest, then the root goes first. The hard cap and shell protect the seed through the cold rest. After that, water wakes it, and a tip pushes into the soil, so the baby can drink before the leaves open.
The Shoot Rises
Step three: the shoot rises. A shoot climbs up, and the first leaves find the light. Years later, it can grow tall enough to make new acorns of its own.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at an acorn! The cap is a little hat that protects the top. The shell is hard armor around the seed. The packed lunch is the food stored for the baby oak. The root tip is the first part to grow. The shoot grows up into the trunk and leaves.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Most acorns get eaten, and only a few become trees. Some oaks need two seasons before the acorn is ready. A forgotten squirrel stash is a secret nursery. Safety first: collect fallen acorns, and do not peel bark off living oaks.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, split a fallen acorn, and look for the lunch inside. Plant another one in a cup of soil. Which part looks like food? Which part became the root?
