Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Today's expedition is a big one. Why do forests feel cooler?

The Big Idea

A forest is living shade, plus living air conditioning. Leaves block the sun, and they release water vapor that carries heat away. So the air under the trees feels cooler. You can feel the difference as soon as you step into the shade.

Sun Hits the Canopy

Step one: the sun hits the canopy. The canopy is the layer of leaves at the top, and it works like an umbrella. The leaves catch the glare first.

Shade and Vapor

Step two: shade falls, and leaves release vapor. The ground stays dimmer and damper, and leaves release water vapor through tiny pores. The scientific word is transpiration. It is a kind of air conditioning that nature built all by itself.

Air Feels Cooler

Step three: the air feels cooler. Evaporation uses up heat, so the heat is carried away. A forest trail can feel several degrees cooler than open pavement. A walk in the woods on a hot day is a great way to cool off.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at forest cooling! The sun is the heat coming in. The canopy blocks much of the sunlight. Shade keeps the ground cool and damp. Water vapor floats up and carries heat away. The trail below feels cool and calm. Trees really are good for towns, too.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dark pavement stores heat, but leafy ground does not bake the same way. A breeze under trees can feel even cooler. Cutting down a whole canopy can make a neighborhood hotter. Safety first: take forest walks with a grown-up, and bring water on hot days.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, stand in a sunny driveway. Then stand under a big tree. Which spot felt cooler on your arms? Was it the shade, the damp air, or both?

Outro

Now you know! Forests cool the air with shade and water. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
