Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's explore the wild together. Why do some plants have thorns?

The Big Idea

Thorns, spines, and prickles are plant armor. They turn a juicy stem or leaf into a painful snack, so many animals try a different plant. Let's see how a thorn helps! Armor is a smart idea when you cannot run away.

The Plant Grows Food

Step one: the plant grows food. A plant makes soft, juicy stems and leaves using sunlight. To a hungry animal, those look like a tasty meal.

A Point Forms

Step two: a sharp point forms. A thorn or spine grows out and hardens into a sharp point. Some are changed leaves, and some grow from the skin of the stem.

The Mouth Backs Off

Step three: the animal backs off. A hungry animal feels the poke, and it leaves the plant alone. The threat is enough, and the plant keeps its leaves, so flowers and fruit have time to grow.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at plant armor! A thorn is a sharp guard that grows out of the stem. The stem is the juicy part the armor protects. The leaf is the sunlight-catcher that the plant must keep. The sharp point is the part that says, stop! Bark is the tough skin on an older stem.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Thorns, spines, and prickles are not exactly the same part, but they all poke. Some thorns hide in pretty flowers, so look before you grab a bouquet. A cactus spine is a changed leaf. Safety first: do not grab wild thorny stems. If a prickle sticks you, tell a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at a rose stem. Then look at a smooth houseplant stem, with no grabbing. Which one would a hungry animal skip? What job is the point doing?

Outro

Now you know! Thorns are armor that help plants survive. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
