Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do pine trees stay green all year?

The Big Idea

Pine needles are leaves built for winter. They are thin, tough, and waxy, so they can keep making a little food even when other trees are bare. That is why pines stay green! That is very helpful when winter makes water hard to find, because frozen water cannot be drunk.

The Needle Grows

Step one: the needle grows. A thin leaf appears in a bundle on the branch. Its slim shape is built to handle cold.

Wax Coats It

Step two: wax coats it. A waxy coat covers the needle, so water stays inside. The small shape also sheds snow easily. The shape of the needle also means less surface for water to escape.

Old Needles Drop

Step three: old needles drop, a few at a time. The tree drops its oldest needles, but only some each year. Because it never drops them all at once, it always has green needles working. Pine trees are a great example of a tree that is built for the cold.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a pine branch! The needle is a thin, tough leaf. The wax coat slows down water loss. The bundle is where several needles grow together. The cone holds the tree's seeds. The branch holds it all up.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Evergreen does not mean it never drops leaves. It means not all at once. Needles can stay on a pine for several years. Thick sap can help seal small winter wounds. Safety first: pine sap is sticky, so wash your hands, and do not taste it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, compare a pine needle and a wide maple leaf. Feel both of them. Which one feels waxier? Why would wax help in dry, cold air?

Outro

Now you know! Pine needles are tough little leaves that keep working all winter. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
