What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Today's expedition is a big one. Why do flowers smell sweet?

The Big Idea

A sweet smell is like a billboard for a flower. It tells bees, butterflies, and other helpers that nectar and pollen are here. So flowers smell sweet to get visitors! Smell is a message that travels through the air.

The Flower Opens

Step one: the flower opens. The petals spread, and tiny smell bits leave the bloom. Those scent molecules float through the air like an invisible trail.

A Helper Follows

Step two: a helper follows the smell. A bee or butterfly notices the scent and tracks it to the flower. It lands to sip sweet nectar, and pollen sticks to its body.

Pollen Travels On

Step three: the pollen travels on. The helper flies off, carrying pollen dust on its fuzzy body. At the next flower, the pollen arrives, and seeds can start to form. It is a kind of teamwork between plants and animals.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a flower! Petals are bright signs that catch a visitor's eye. The scent is the smell trail that floats out into the air. Nectar is the sweet drink that rewards a visitor. Pollen is the golden dust that rides along on the visitor. The stamen is the little stalk that holds the pollen.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Bright colors and a sweet smell often work as a team. Not every flower smells pretty, and some smell like rotting fruit to invite flies. Wind-pollinated flowers, like many grasses, may have almost no scent. Safety first: sniff gently, and do not eat garden flowers.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, sniff a blooming flower in a garden. Then look at a grass seed head. Which one advertised harder? Who was the ad for?
