Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Grab your explorer hat! Why do trees have bark?

The Big Idea

Bark is a tree's coat and shield. It keeps out bugs, weather, and bumps that could hurt the soft parts inside. Let's see how this tough coat works! Think of it like a raincoat and a helmet, all wrapped around the trunk.

Living Layer Works

Step one: a living layer does the busy work. Just under the surface, a thin living layer carries sugary food around the tree. The wood right beside it carries water, so the tree stays fed and watered.

Outer Bark Hardens

Step two: the outer bark hardens. The outer layer of bark is actually dead, and it becomes tough, dry armor. Because it is dead and hard, it protects the living layer underneath. Even the wrinkles and ridges are part of the design.

Armor Keeps Guard

Step three: the armor keeps guard. Rain slides off the rough coat, and many insects cannot chew through it easily. Meanwhile, new bark forms as the trunk gets wider, so the coat always fits.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a tree trunk! The outer bark is dry, tough armor. The inner bark is a living layer that carries sugary food. The living tubes do busy work just under the surface. The wood carries water up and holds the tree up strong. Heartwood is the old, hard center of the trunk.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Never strip bark off a living tree, because that can kill the food tubes. Thick bark helps some trees survive fire. Birch bark is famous for peeling in thin curls. Some bark is corky, and some is ridged like armor plates.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, feel a smooth young twig. Then feel a rough old trunk. Which coat is thicker? What job is the rough coat doing?

Outro

Now you know! Bark is a tree's tough, clever coat. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
