Book 33, Question 124 · Video
Are people apes?
Yes. Scientists group humans with the great apes: chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans. People have no tails, have broad chests, and have shoulders that can rotate widely, just like apes. We share a common ancestor with them. We are the only apes who walk upright all the time and build cities. Humans are special apes.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Are people apes?
The Big Idea
Are people apes? Yes, we are! What's the evidence?
Great Apes
Step one: Great Apes. Scientists group humans with the great apes: chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans, the big tailless primates of Africa and Asia. We all belong to the same family, called the great apes, and it's a big, clever family.
Shared Features
Step two: Shared Features. People have no tails, have broad chests, and have shoulders that can rotate widely, just like apes. You can swing your arms in big circles, just like a gibbon. Try it, and you're moving like an ape!
Common Ancestor
Step three: Common Ancestor. We share a common ancestor with the other apes. Our DNA shows how closely we're all related, and chimps and bonobos are our closest cousins.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! All apes. All apes. Rotate widely. Shared.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Gorillas are the largest living apes. Apes have no tails. Ape shoulders rotate widely. DNA shows kinship.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Stand next to a mirror. Check for a tail. Check for a broad chest. Swing your arms in big circles. Check off each ape feature you share.
Outro
Scientists group humans with the great apes: chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans. Like them, we have no tails, broad chests, and widely rotating shoulders, and we share a common ancestor. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises. Keep asking big questions, and keep exploring with me! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books.
