Do all mammals have tails?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Do all mammals have tails?

The Big Idea

Cats, horses, and beavers have tails. But do all mammals? Let's find out!

Tail Jobs

Step one: Tail Jobs. Most mammals have tails. Cats use their tails for balance, and horses use theirs to swat flies.

Paddle Tails

Step two: Paddle Tails. A beaver's tail is flat like a paddle. It also slaps the water with a loud smack to warn other beavers of danger, and stores fat for winter.

No Tail

Step three: No Tail. Apes, including humans, have no outside tail, just a tiny set of bones at the bottom of the spine called the tailbone. Koalas have only a tiny stub, which makes sitting in trees more comfortable.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Balance. Swat flies. Paddle. Tailbone.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The tailbone is a leftover of the tail our ancestors had. Beavers slap their tails. Koalas have stubs. Apes have no tails.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw three mammals with different tails. Draw one tail for balance. Draw one tail for swimming. Draw one for flicking flies. Label each job.

Outro

Most mammals have tails: cats use them for balance, horses swat flies, and beavers paddle. Apes, including humans, have only a tailbone, and koalas have just a tiny stub. Tails come in all shapes. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! The more you look around, the more wonders you will find, so keep your eyes open!
