Why are people mammals too?
People are mammals. We have hair, we make milk for babies, we are warm-blooded, and we have three ear bones and a diaphragm. We even have a tailbone. When scientists compare our bodies to those of other animals, they see many matches. We are most closely related to apes and monkeys. People are mammals who walk upright and use tools.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are people mammals too?
The Big Idea
People are mammals. But we're pretty unusual mammals! What makes us different?
Walking Upright
Step one: Walking Upright. Lots of mammals can stand up, but people walk upright on two legs all the time. That leaves our hands free to carry things and use tools.
Long Childhood
Step two: Long Childhood. People have one of the longest childhoods of any mammal. We spend many years learning from family and friends before we're grown up.
Super Sweaters
Step three: Super Sweaters. People can sweat a lot, which cools us down. That's one reason humans are good at walking and running long distances in the heat.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Always. Use tools. Very long. Lots of it.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Humans and chimpanzees share most of their DNA. We sweat more than most mammals. We learn for many years. We walk on two legs all the time.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look in a mirror. List three things that make people unusual mammals. Think about walking, growing up, and sweating. Ask a grown-up what they'd add. Draw yourself with labels.
Outro
People are mammals, but unusual ones. We walk upright all the time with free hands, have one of the longest childhoods of any mammal, and can sweat a lot, which helps us walk and run far in the heat.
