Why do sea snakes have flat tails?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do sea snakes have flat tails?

The Big Idea

Some snakes live in the ocean! They have flat tails like paddles. Why?

Paddle Tails

Step one: Paddle Tails. Sea snakes live in warm ocean waters. Their tails are flat like paddles, which makes them better at pushing against the water.

Nostrils on Top

Step two: Nostrils on Top. Their nostrils are on top of the snout, so they can breathe air at the surface. Special flaps close their nostrils when they dive.

Long Dives

Step three: Long Dives. Sea snakes come up for air, but some can stay down for a long time. Their bodies are shaped for a watery life, and many are venomous, so people should never handle them.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Paddle shaped. On top. Home. Long.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sea snakes are more at home in water than on land. Flat tails work like paddles. Nostrils sit on top of the snout. Never handle sea snakes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up to cut a paddle shape from cardboard. Attach it to a stick. Sweep it through a sink of water. Feel the push. Then try the thin edge. Which pushes more?
