How long can a turtle hold its breath?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How long can a turtle hold its breath?

The Big Idea

Turtles breathe air. But they can stay underwater a long time! How long can a turtle hold its breath?

Active Dives

Step one: Active Dives. Turtles breathe air, but they can stay underwater for a long time. A busy sea turtle may dive for ten minutes or more.

Resting Turtles

Step two: Resting Turtles. When a turtle rests, its body slows down. Then it can go for hours without a breath.

Winter Slowdown

Step three: Winter Slowdown. Freshwater turtles slow down even more in winter. A turtle's slow, steady use of oxygen lets it stay under much longer than people can.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Ten minutes or more. Hours. Even longer. Used slowly.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A resting sea turtle can stay under for hours. Turtles breathe air with lungs. Slow bodies use less oxygen. Never hold your breath in water alone.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Sit on a chair on dry land. Take a normal breath and hold it only as long as is comfortable. Have a grown-up time you. Rest, then breathe normally. Never hold your breath in water alone.

Outro

Turtles breathe air but can stay under a long time. A busy sea turtle may dive for ten minutes or more, and a resting turtle can go for hours, because it uses oxygen slowly and steadily.
