Book 32, Question 46
How long can a turtle hold its breath?
Turtles breathe air, but they can stay underwater for a long time.
A busy sea turtle may dive for ten minutes or more. When a turtle rests, its body slows, and it can go for hours without a breath. Freshwater turtles slow down even more in winter. A turtle’s slow, steady use of oxygen lets it stay under for much longer than people can.
