Why does a python’s gut grow and shrink?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a python’s gut grow and shrink?

The Big Idea

A python's insides can change size! They grow after a big meal. Why?

Rare Meals

Step one: Rare Meals. A big python may eat only a few times a year. Scientists have found that its insides change with each meal.

Growing

Step two: Growing. When a python swallows a large meal, its intestines, heart, and other organs quickly grow bigger. That helps it break down the food fast.

Shrinking

Step three: Shrinking. When the food is gone and the snake rests, those organs shrink back. That saves energy. It's an on-demand body.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Rare. Fast. While resting. Saved.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists have studied Burmese pythons to learn how these changes work. Even the heart grows after a meal. Pythons eat rarely. Shrinking saves energy.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Blow up a balloon a little. Let the air out. Think of how a python's gut grows and shrinks. Draw a python before and after a meal. Label the organs that grow.

Outro

A big python may eat only a few times a year. After a large meal, its intestines, heart, and other organs quickly grow to digest the food, then shrink back while it rests, saving energy. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! The more you look around, the more wonders you will find, so keep your eyes open!
