Book 32, Question 12 · Video
What makes some snakes glow with rainbow colors?
Some snakes seem to glow with blue, green, and purple when light hits them. That glow comes from tiny ridges and layers in the scales that bend and bounce light, not from paint-like colors. It is the same kind of effect you see in a soap bubble or a CD. The shimmer changes as the snake moves, which can make its body harder to follow.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What makes some snakes glow with rainbow colors?
The Big Idea
Some snakes shimmer with rainbow colors! Blue, green, and purple. What makes them glow?
Tiny Ridges
Step one: Tiny Ridges. Some snakes seem to glow with blue, green, and purple when light hits them. That glow comes from tiny ridges and layers in the scales, not from paint-like colors.
Bending Light
Step two: Bending Light. The ridges bend and bounce light. It's the same kind of effect you see in a soap bubble or a CD.
Shifting Shimmer
Step three: Shifting Shimmer. The shimmer changes as the snake moves. That can make its body harder to follow.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! In scales. Bent and bounced. Same effect. Changes color.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Shimmering colors from tiny structures are called iridescence. Soap bubbles shimmer the same way. It's not paint-like color. Colors shift as the snake moves.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Hold an old CD under a bright room light. Tilt it slowly. Watch the colors change. Never look at the Sun on a CD. That's how a rainbow snake shimmers.
Outro
Some snakes shimmer blue, green, and purple because tiny ridges and layers in their scales bend and bounce light, like a soap bubble. This iridescence shifts as the snake moves. Science is amazing!
