Can crows count?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Can crows count?

The Big Idea

Crows are clever birds. But can they count? Let's find out!

Small Numbers

Step one: Small Numbers. Crows and ravens can keep track of small numbers. They notice when there's more or less of something.

Dot Cards

Step two: Dot Cards. In experiments, crows learned to choose a card with a certain number of dots. Some could even call out that many times in a row.

Not Like Us

Step three: Not Like Us. Crows probably don't count the way we do with number words. But comparing amounts is very useful when finding food or watching a nest.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Small ones. Picked right. Counted out. More or less.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Many animals can tell more from less, and some can count a bit. Ravens can track numbers too. Some crows call out a number of times. Crows are clever.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Put 2, 3, and 4 pennies in three cups. Ask a friend to pick the cup with the most, without counting out loud. Try again with 5 and 6. Which was harder? Keep coins away from little kids.

Outro

Crows and ravens can keep track of small numbers. In experiments, they picked cards with the right number of dots, and some called out that many times, though they don't count with number words like we do. Science is amazing!
