How do young songbirds learn their songs?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do young songbirds learn their songs?

The Big Idea

Baby songbirds aren't born knowing their songs! They have to learn them. How do they do it?

Listening

Step one: Listening. Many songbirds aren't born knowing their songs. A young bird listens closely to adults singing nearby.

Subsong

Step two: Subsong. Then it starts to practice quiet, wobbly sounds called subsong. It's a bit like a baby babbling.

Getting It Right

Step three: Getting It Right. Over weeks, the sounds become more exact until the song matches what the bird heard. A bird raised alone, without hearing others, often sings a plain and strange song. That shows how important listening is.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Hear adults. Wobbly sounds. Weeks of it. Matches.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Learning a song is a lot like learning to talk. Young birds babble first. Hearing adults is important. Practice takes weeks.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a friend to teach you a short whistle or hum tune. Practice it quietly. Then sing it back to them. Count your tries. How many did it take to get it right?

Outro

Many young songbirds aren't born knowing their songs, so they learn by listening to adults. They practice wobbly subsong, like a baby babbling, and over weeks their song gets more exact until it matches what they heard. Science is amazing!
