Why do some birds carry away broken eggshells?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some birds carry away broken eggshells?

The Big Idea

After hatching, some parents clean up! They carry away the empty shells. Why do they do that?

Easy to Spot

Step one: Easy to Spot. After a chick hatches, the empty shell is bright white inside. That makes it easy to spot from far away.

A Famous Experiment

Step two: A Famous Experiment. In a famous experiment on gulls, scientists saw that nests with leftover shells were found more often by hungry animals. So shells near a nest can give away its location.

Carry It Off

Step three: Carry It Off. Many parents pick up the pieces in their beaks and drop them far away. They also keep the nest tidy and clean, which helps protect the chicks.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Easy to see. Gulls studied. Dropped far. Safer chicks.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some parent birds even eat the shell to get back calcium. Scientists studied gulls to learn this. White is easy to spot. Tidy nests are safer.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Place a piece of white paper on a lawn. Place a speckled piece nearby. Walk far away and look back. Which one is easier to spot? Why does hiding help a nest?

Outro

Scientists found that gull nests with leftover shells were found more often, so many parents carry shells far away and keep their nests tidy to protect their chicks. Science is amazing!
