Book 31, Question 75
Why do some birds carry away broken eggshells?
After a chick hatches, the empty shell is bright white inside and easy to spot.
In a famous experiment on gulls, scientists saw that nests with leftover shells were found more often by hungry animals. Many parents pick up the pieces in their beaks and drop them far away. They also keep the nest tidy and clean, which helps protect the chicks.
