Why do beaks keep growing?

Video · 1:46 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 31

A beak is made of bone covered with a tough sheath of keratin, the same material as your fingernails. Like fingernails, the sheath keeps growing from the base. As the bird crunches seeds and wipes its beak on branches, the tip wears down. The two balance out, so the beak stays the right length and sharp. If the tip gets chipped, it can slowly regrow.

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do beaks keep growing?

The Big Idea

Did you know beaks keep growing? Just like your fingernails! Why don't they get too long?

Bone and Keratin

Step one: Bone and Keratin. A beak is made of bone covered with a tough sheath of keratin. That's the same material as your fingernails.

Always Growing

Step two: Always Growing. Like fingernails, the sheath keeps growing from the base. New beak material is added all the time.

Wearing Down

Step three: Wearing Down. As the bird crunches seeds and wipes its beak on branches, the tip wears down. The growing and wearing balance out, so the beak stays the right length and sharp. A chipped tip can slowly regrow.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Inside. Outside sheath. From the base. At the tip.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Both beaks and fingernails are made of keratin. Growth and wear balance out. Chipped beak tips can slowly regrow. Crunching seeds helps wear beaks down.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Measure one of your fingernails with a ruler today. Write down the length. Measure it again in one week. How much did it grow? Beaks grow in the same way.

Outro

A beak is bone covered by a keratin sheath, like your fingernails, that keeps growing from the base. Crunching seeds and wiping on branches wears the tip down, so it stays just the right length. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why!
