Why do birds have no teeth?

Video · 1:56 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 31

Teeth are heavy, and a flying animal does best when it stays light. Birds use a lightweight beak instead, and their strong gizzard does the chewing deeper inside. Their long-ago ancestors had teeth, and fossils show it. Over millions of years, birds lost them, and a tiny egg tooth that falls off soon after hatching is all that is left.

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do birds have no teeth?

The Big Idea

Look inside a bird's beak. You will not find a single tooth! Why do birds have no teeth?

Stay Light

Step one: Stay Light. Teeth are heavy, and a flying animal does best when it stays light. So birds use a lightweight beak instead, and their strong gizzard does the grinding deeper inside.

Long-Ago Teeth

Step two: Long-Ago Teeth. The long-ago ancestors of birds did have teeth, and fossils show it. Over millions of years, birds lost their teeth.

The Egg Tooth

Step three: The Egg Tooth. Chicks still grow a tiny pointed bump on the beak called an egg tooth to crack the shell. But it is not a real tooth. It is a hard little tip that falls off soon after hatching.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Light and strong. Grinds the food. Ancestors had teeth. Falls off soon.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Beaks are much lighter than a mouth full of teeth. Some fossil birds had teeth. A chick's egg tooth falls off quickly. The gizzard does the grinding.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at pictures of five different beaks. Sort them by what the bird eats. Seeds, fish, insects, or nectar. Notice how each beak does a job teeth might do. Which beak was the hardest to sort?

Outro

Teeth are heavy, so birds use light beaks and a strong gizzard instead. Their ancient ancestors had teeth, but birds lost them long ago. A chick's egg tooth is just a hard little bump for cracking the shell, not a real tooth. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
