Book 31, Question 3
Why do birds have no teeth?
Teeth are heavy, and a flying animal does best when it stays light.
Birds use a lightweight beak instead, and their strong gizzard does the chewing deeper inside. Their long-ago ancestors had teeth, and fossils show it. Over millions of years, birds lost them, and a tiny egg tooth that falls off soon after hatching is all that is left.
