How does ultraviolet light kill germs in water?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does ultraviolet light kill germs in water?

The Big Idea

Some light can't be seen! But it can still zap germs. How?

Invisible Light

Step one: Invisible Light. Ultraviolet, or UV, light is invisible light made by special lamps. Our eyes can't see it, but it carries lots of energy.

Stopping Germs

Step two: Stopping Germs. When water flows past the lamp, UV light damages the genetic material of germs so they can't multiply. It adds no chemicals or taste to the water.

Safety

Step three: Safety. Many treatment plants and some home systems use UV. UV light can hurt eyes and skin, so the lamps are enclosed and no one should look at them.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Makes UV. Flows past. Can't multiply. For safety.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Sun also gives off UV light, which is why we wear sunscreen. You can't see it. Adds no chemicals. Never look at UV lamps.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at UV-sensitive beads indoors. Take them out into sunlight. Watch them change color. Bring them back inside. Never look at a UV lamp.
