Book 30, Question 66 · Video
How do underwater plants help the pond breathe?
Underwater plants make food from sunlight in a process called photosynthesis, and they release oxygen into the water. On a sunny day, you can sometimes see tiny bubbles rising from the leaves. Fish and insects use that oxygen. At night, plants use some oxygen too, which is why too many plants can sometimes leave ponds low on oxygen before morning.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do underwater plants help the pond breathe?
The Big Idea
Underwater plants help ponds breathe! They make oxygen. How?
Photosynthesis
Step one: Photosynthesis. Underwater plants make food from sunlight in a process called photosynthesis. As they do, they release oxygen into the water.
Bubbles
Step two: Bubbles. On a sunny day, you can sometimes see tiny bubbles rising from the leaves. Fish, snails, and insects all use that oxygen to breathe.
At Night
Step three: At Night. At night, plants use some oxygen too. That's why too many plants can sometimes leave a pond low on oxygen before morning.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Powers it. Make oxygen. Rise up. Breathe it.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Oxygen bubbles are strongest at midday. Plants make oxygen. Fish use oxygen. Plants use some at night.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Put a leafy water plant in a clear jar of water. Set it in the sun. Wait an hour. Look closely at the leaves. Do you see tiny bubbles?
Outro
Underwater plants make food from sunlight by photosynthesis and release oxygen, which you may see as tiny bubbles on sunny days. Fish and insects use that oxygen, but at night plants use some too, so too many plants can leave ponds low by morning. Science is amazing! What will you discover next?
