How does a heron’s bendy neck work like a spring?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a heron’s bendy neck work like a spring?

The Big Idea

Herons catch fish in a flash! Their necks work like a spring. How?

A Special Kink

Step one: A Special Kink. A great blue heron has a special kink in its neck. One neck bone is long and bends sharply, so the neck folds into an S shape.

Snap!

Step two: Snap!. When a fish swims near, the heron lets its neck snap straight, like a released spring. Its bill stabs forward faster than your eye can follow.

Dinner

Step three: Dinner. Herons often swallow a fish whole, head first. A heron's neck has many more bones than the seven in your neck.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Folded. The kink. Super fast. Swallowed whole.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A heron's neck has many more bones than the seven in your neck. Folds into an S. Faster than your eye. Swallowed head first.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a heron with its neck folded in an S. Draw another with its neck stretched out. Mark where the neck bends. Draw a fish nearby. How fast do you think it strikes?
