Book 30, Question 61
How does a heron’s bendy neck work like a spring?
A great blue heron has a special kink in its neck.
One of the neck bones is long and bends sharply, so the neck folds into an S shape. When a fish swims near, the heron lets the neck snap straight, like a released spring, and its bill stabs forward faster than your eye can follow. Herons often swallow a fish whole, head first.
