Book 30, Question 6 · Video
Which lake is the deepest in the world?
Lake Baikal in Russia is the deepest lake, reaching about 1,640 meters, or over a mile. It sits in a rift where Earth's crust is slowly pulling apart, which makes it very deep and very old. It holds about one-fifth of all the unfrozen fresh water on the surface of Earth. Lakes made by moving crust are called tectonic lakes.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Which lake is the deepest in the world?
The Big Idea
Some lakes are deeper than others! One lake is the deepest of all. Which one is it?
Lake Baikal
Step one: Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal in Russia is the deepest lake in the world. It reaches about 1,640 meters down, which is more than a mile.
A Rift
Step two: A Rift. Baikal sits in a rift, where Earth's crust is slowly pulling apart. That makes it very deep and very old, about 25 million years old.
Tons of Water
Step three: Tons of Water. Lake Baikal holds about one-fifth of all the unfrozen fresh water on Earth's surface. Lakes made by moving crust are called tectonic lakes.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Over a mile. 25 million years. One-fifth. Pulling apart.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Baikal is about 25 million years old, making it one of the oldest lakes on Earth. About 1,640 meters deep. Crust pulls apart. Huge amount of fresh water.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Choose four lakes, including Baikal. Look up how deep each one is. Draw a bar for each on long paper. Make the deepest bar the longest. How much deeper is Baikal?
