Book 30, Question 2 · Video
Can a space rock make a lake?
Yes. A big space rock that crashes into Earth digs a bowl-shaped crater, which can fill with water. In northern Quebec, the Clearwater Lakes are a twin pair formed by an impact. Manicouagan, a huge ring-shaped lake, surrounds an island at the center of a crater that is about 214 million years old. Today, the crater is eroded, but the ring of water shows where it was.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Can a space rock make a lake?
The Big Idea
Some lakes came from outer space! Well, sort of. Can a space rock make a lake?
A Big Crash
Step one: A Big Crash. Yes! A big space rock that crashes into Earth digs a bowl-shaped crater. Over time, that crater can fill with water.
Quebec Lakes
Step two: Quebec Lakes. In northern Quebec, the Clearwater Lakes are a twin pair formed by an impact. Scientists study them to learn about ancient crashes.
Manicouagan
Step three: Manicouagan. Manicouagan is a huge ring-shaped lake around an island at the center of a crater about 214 million years old. The crater has worn down, but the ring of water shows where it was.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Crashes in. Bowl shape. Fills it. Shows the edge.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Impact craters can be found in Canada, from Quebec to Ontario to Saskatchewan. About 214 million years old. An island in the middle. Clearwater is a twin pair.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Fill a tray with flour or sand. Drop a marble in to make a crater. Carefully lift the marble out. Pour in a little water. Where does it collect? Wipe up spills.
Outro
A big space rock that hits Earth digs a bowl-shaped crater that can fill with water.
