Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do nails have points and screws have threads?
The Big Idea
A nail is a wedge that you tap. A screw is a ramp that you twist. Both hold wood together, but they grab in different ways! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!
Step 1
Step one: the point starts! A sharp tip finds a tiny gap in the wood and splits the fibers apart, so the nail can slide in. Nails wedge in, and screws twist in.
Step 2
Step two: the threads catch! A screw's spiral thread is a tiny ramp wrapped around a rod. Its ridges bite into the wood. That's why screws are harder to pull out.
Step 3
Step three: the twist pulls it in! Each turn walks the screw deeper into the wood. Then fibers pinch the nail, and the threads lock the screw. Both are great ways to hold wood.
A Closer Look
Let's compare a nail and a screw! Both of them have a point at the end. Only the screw has a spiral thread. The shank is the long body, and the head is the top. Every part has an important job to do!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A screw is an inclined plane, which is a ramp curled around a rod. Finish nails have tiny heads, so they can hide under paint. Pilot holes help screws start straight in hard wood. Use nails and screws only with a grown-up, and never point tools at anyone. Wow, those are some amazing facts to share with your friends!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look at a nail and a screw with a grown-up. Which one has a ramp wrapped around it? Which one is mostly a wedge? Write down what you notice, and become a fastener expert! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun!
